YouTube Revamps Comments to Boost Creator Engagement and Revenue
YouTube has announced exciting enhancements to its comments section, along with the launch of various community-driven features aimed at enriching creator engagement and monetization, during the Made On YouTube event held on Wednesday. Users can now reply with GIFs or comment directly from their TVs, while creators will gain access to new tools designed to bolster their fan interactions, including personalized moderation settings, VIP-like member areas, and innovative ways for fans to financially support their content.
Upgraded Commenting Experience
As one of the primary methods for YouTube viewers to engage with creators, the comments section has often fallen behind the interactive features offered by competing social networks. For instance, TikTok has recently enabled users to respond to videos using voice comments and incorporate polls, photo carousels, and Live Photos into their remarks. Meanwhile, Spotify allows video podcasters to engage audiences through polls and Q&A sessions.

New Moderation Tools for Creators
YouTube is making strides to enhance the commenting experience by introducing GIF support and enabling users to comment while watching on TV, using voice commands instead of struggling with text input via remote controls. Additionally, a noteworthy feature is the personalized comment moderation tool tailored to the unique needs of each creator. Although YouTube already provides a comment moderation filter, this new option allows for more precise customization, particularly beneficial during live streams where real-time engagement is crucial. Currently, this personalized moderation is being tested as an “experiment,” with limited technical details shared about its functionality.

Expanding Creator Monetization Options
In addition to enhancing the commenting features, YouTube is also introducing tools aimed at helping creators expand their fan communities and monetize effectively. As advertising revenue becomes less reliable, these new features are timely. The Channel Memberships are evolving to include exclusive, paid communities where members can share content and engage in discussions with fellow top fans. YouTube plans to showcase these communities on a dedicated “channel memberships” page, making it easier for viewers to discover options that align with their interests.
Furthermore, the “Hype” feature, which allows fans to promote lesser-known creators’ videos, is set to receive an upgrade called “Hype with Jewels.” Previously limited to three free hyping actions per week, fans can now purchase Jewels, a virtual currency, to amplify their support for videos, ultimately assisting creators in growing their audiences. Additionally, fans eager for recognition can see their handles permanently featured in the video descriptions.
So far, viewers have hyped over 75 million unique videos more than 1 billion times.

Upcoming Features for Enhanced Interaction
YouTube is also set to introduce a direct messaging feature that will support group chats for sharing videos with friends and family in the coming months. Users will have the option to record quick, unedited videos for sharing within these conversations, enhancing the overall communication experience.
These community-oriented features are being launched alongside other innovative tools for creators, including options for A/B testing, live dubbing, AI-assisted video editing, and much more.
