On Wednesday, U.S. cryptocurrency giant Coinbase expanded its investment in Indian exchange CoinDCX, pushing its post-money valuation to $2.45 billion to capitalize on the country’s massive digital-asset potential despite ongoing regulatory uncertainty.

A Strategic Valuation Boost Amid Regulatory Hurdles

This fresh injection of capital serves as an extension of CoinDCX’s previous funding round and remains subject to customary closing conditions and regulatory approvals. While the companies chose not to disclose the exact investment amount or Coinbase’s final equity stake, they confirmed the deal elevates the Indian exchange’s valuation from the $2.15 billion recorded during its April 2022 funding raise.

CoinDCX confirmed that this transaction represents entirely new capital committed by Coinbase. The U.S.-based trading giant has maintained an active investment in CoinDCX since 2020, most recently backing the platform’s Series D round in 2022 through its investment arm, Coinbase Ventures.

Overcoming Security Breaches and Acquisition Rumors

This financial backing arrives at a critical juncture. Just months ago, in July, CoinDCX suffered a major security breach resulting in the theft of approximately $44 million in digital assets. Furthermore, the deal follows widespread speculation earlier this year that Coinbase was actively acquiring CoinDCX—rumors that the Indian firm’s CEO firmly denied at the time.

“This investment adds to our growing presence in the region, where we also maintain local operations and other important local partners,” said Shan Aggarwal, Coinbase’s Chief Business Officer, in an official blog post. “Taken together, these steps reflect a clear commitment: we believe India and its neighbors will help shape the future of the global onchain economy.”

Navigating India’s Complex Crypto Landscape

Coinbase’s renewed push comes after a period of friction. More than a year after halting its Indian operations, the U.S. firm successfully re-entered the market earlier this year by securing a registration with India’s Financial Intelligence Unit (FIU). Coinbase also holds a stake in CoinSwitch, another prominent player in the Indian crypto sector.

As the world’s most populous nation with over one billion internet subscribers, India represents an indispensable market for global technology companies. However, high taxes have kept the domestic crypto market relatively small. The Indian government imposes a flat 30% tax on digital asset gains alongside a 1% tax deducted at source (TDS) on every transaction. Additionally, offshore exchanges face strict registration mandates with India’s financial watchdog. Recently, 25 international platforms—including BingX, LBank, and CoinW—faced government scrutiny for failing to register and comply with local anti-money laundering frameworks.

Leveraging Local Market Dominance and MENA Expansion

Securing a deeper partnership with CoinDCX aligns with Coinbase’s broader growth strategy. CoinDCX boasts a massive domestic footprint, serving more than 20.4 million users. In July, the company reported robust financial metrics, including customer assets exceeding ₹100 billion (approximately $1.12 billion), annualized group revenues of ₹11.79 billion ($133 million), and annualized transaction volumes of ₹13.7 trillion ($154.6 billion).

Targeting Middle East and North Africa Growth

Beyond India, CoinDCX expanded its geographical reach into the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region last year through the acquisition of BitOasis. Coinbase can leverage this established presence to capture market share in one of the world’s fastest-growing digital asset corridors.

According to CoinDCX, the newly acquired capital will fund advanced product development, accelerate user acquisition, drive geographic expansion, and scale educational initiatives.

“We see strong synergies with Coinbase in building a compliant and regulatory-friendly crypto ecosystem in India, MENA, and beyond,” stated Sumit Gupta, co-founder and CEO of CoinDCX.
