The U.S. Treasury Department has officially lifted its sanctions against cryptocurrency mixer Tornado Cash following a high-profile legal battle over allegations that the platform was used to launder over $7 billion in stolen digital assets by North Korean state-sponsored hackers.

The Legal Battle and Treasury’s Reversal

In a statement, Treasury officials confirmed they “exercised our discretion” to remove Tornado Cash from the sanctions list. This sudden policy reversal comes directly on the heels of a major legal battle. Prior to this delisting, the blacklisting made it strictly illegal for any American citizens or U.S.-based businesses to interact or transact with the privacy-focused protocol.

Understanding Tornado Cash and the Security Risks

Crypto mixers like Tornado Cash operate by blending various transactions together. This process effectively conceals the origin of the funds, allowing users to hide tainted or illicit capital from law enforcement and blockchain tracking tools.

Back in 2022, the federal government heavily accused the “notorious” Tornado Cash of facilitating massive money laundering schemes. Specifically, authorities alleged the platform acted as a primary pipeline for North Korea to launder cyber-theft proceeds, which the regime reportedly uses to fund its controversial nuclear weapons program.

Criminal Prosecution of the Founders

The regulatory crackdown extended beyond the software itself. In August 2023, the two founders of Tornado Cash faced severe criminal charges in a New York federal court. Prosecutors accused them of conspiracy to commit money laundering and violating international sanctions.

U.S. Government Remains On High Alert

Despite the decision to delist the mixing service, federal authorities are not backing down on national security. Following the removal of the sanctions, the Treasury Department emphasized that it remains “deeply concerned” about the persistent threat of sophisticated cyber attacks and crypto heists orchestrated by the North Korean regime.
