Trump Family Eyes Stake in Binance.US Amid Pardon Rumors
The Trump family is actively exploring a potential equity investment in Binance.US, according to a recent report from the Wall Street Journal, marking a highly significant move just years after the cryptocurrency exchange’s American division pleaded guilty to violating federal anti-money laundering regulations.
Inside the Legal Troubles of Binance
The proposed deal follows a turbulent period for the cryptocurrency giant. As part of a landmark federal guilty plea, Binance founder Changpeng Zhao—widely known as “CZ”—paid a staggering $4.3 billion fine and served a four-month prison sentence in 2023. Although Zhao agreed to resign from his role as CEO, he continues to hold the majority of shares in the cryptocurrency exchange.
A High-Stakes Push for a Presidential Pardon
Despite his legal setbacks, Zhao remains the 24th wealthiest individual globally, according to Forbes’ real-time ranking. The Wall Street Journal reports that Zhao has been actively lobbying for a presidential pardon from the Trump administration, adding a complex political dimension to the potential investment.
Commercial Roadblocks and Official Denials
Zhao’s criminal conviction has severely hampered Binance’s operations, making it incredibly difficult for the platform to secure commercial partnerships within the United States or obtain necessary cryptocurrency licenses across Europe. However, Zhao has publicly contested the reports of any ongoing negotiations.
“I have had no discussions of a Binance U.S. deal with… well, anyone,” Zhao stated in a social media post on X, directly disputing the claims. Nevertheless, if these discussions between the Trump family representatives and Binance are indeed occurring, they raise a critical question regarding the ultimate transactional value of executive clemency.
