Sapiom Nabs $15M to Give AI Agents Their Own Wallets
San Francisco-based startup Sapiom has secured a $15 million seed funding round led by Accel to build the financial infrastructure that enables AI agents to autonomously purchase and access software, APIs, data, and computing power.
Bridging the Gap in ‘Vibe Coding’ and App Development
The rise of “vibe coding” has democratized software creation, enabling non-technical individuals to build custom applications using plain-language descriptions through platforms like Lovable. However, moving these projects from basic prototypes to fully functional, production-ready applications remains a significant challenge. Creators often struggle to integrate essential external services, such as Stripe for payment processing, email delivery systems, or SMS communication tools.
The Backend Infrastructure Hurdle
To address these backend complexities, Ilan Zerbib, former director of engineering for payments at Shopify, founded Sapiom last summer. The startup aims to eliminate infrastructure headaches for non-technical creators by establishing a secure transactional layer designed specifically for artificial intelligence.
Sapiom: The Financial Layer for Autonomous AI
Sapiom operates on the premise that every digital interaction carries an underlying cost. When an AI agent connects to an external service like Twilio to send a text message, it triggers an authentication requirement and a micro-payment. Sapiom automates this cycle, allowing AI agents to evaluate, select, and purchase the services they need to function without requiring human approval or manual setup.
Securing $15 Million to Fuel AI Commerce
This B2B-focused financial approach attracted major venture capital. Accel led Sapiom’s $15 million seed round, which also saw participation from prominent investors including Okta Ventures, Gradient Ventures, Array Ventures, Menlo Ventures, Anthropic, and Coinbase Ventures. Amit Kumar, a partner at Accel, emphasized that because every API call, server spin-up on AWS, or outgoing SMS represents a transaction, a dedicated financial framework is essential for enterprise AI adoption.
How Autonomous AI Payments Work in Practice
For creators utilizing vibe-coding platforms, Sapiom removes the friction of manual API management. Instead of registering for individual services, inputting credit cards, and copying API keys, the infrastructure handles these steps invisibly. The platform charges the creator via pass-through fees through their primary development tool, such as Lovable or Bolt.
While Sapiom’s immediate roadmap targets enterprise and B2B solutions, the underlying technology has long-term implications for consumer-facing AI. Eventually, personal AI agents could be trusted to make independent financial decisions, like ordering rides or purchasing products online. For now, Sapiom remains focused on building the foundational business-to-business architecture that makes autonomous software consumption possible.
