Sam Altman’s World Raises $52.5M in Crypto Token Sale
World, the digital identity startup co-founded by OpenAI’s Sam Altman, secured $52.5 million on Friday through a strategic crypto token sale to fund the global expansion of its human-verification network.
Securing Long-Term Backing from Top Crypto Investors
The capital injection involved strategic investors participating in a 12-month lockup sale of World’s native token, WLD. This yearlong lockup restricts buyers from trading or selling their tokens immediately, representing a firm commitment to World’s long-term growth and ecosystem utility.
These funds will be directed to the World Foundation, an exempted limited guarantee foundation based in the Cayman Islands. The entity is tasked with managing and scaling the reach of the decentralized World network.
Venture capital firm Pantera Capital, which specializes in digital assets, led the token sale. Additional participants included prominent industry players such as Eightco Holdings, Bain Capital Crypto, Susquehanna Crypto, and Selini Capital.
The Mission to Separate Humans from AI Bots
The World project is operated by Tools for Humanity (TFH), a San Francisco-based startup led by CEO and co-founder Alex Blania alongside Sam Altman. The venture focuses on online identity verification, offering access to what the company terms “proof of human” tools.
As artificial intelligence and automated bots generate an increasing share of online content, distinguishing real people from digital agents has become a critical challenge. World addresses this by promoting the World ID—an anonymous digital passport designed to prove that a human, rather than an AI, controls a specific account.
How the Iris-Scanning Orb Works
To obtain the highest tier of verification within the system, users must undergo an eye scan using the Orb. This custom-designed metallic sphere scans the user’s iris and converts the biological data into a unique cryptographic identifier. These Orbs are deployed at World’s corporate offices and various partner locations globally.

Rebranding, Adoption Hurdles, and Future Outlook
The initiative originally launched under the name “Worldcoin,” which remains the name of the crypto asset sold in this recent round. Users can hold or trade WLD tokens directly through the World app, which functions as a custodial wallet. The project subsequently rebranded to World following broader public and regulatory pushback against the cryptocurrency sector.
In April, the project introduced an updated version of its mobile application and announced integration plans with platforms like Tinder, Zoom, and Docusign. Despite these high-profile integrations, World has faced challenges in scaling its operations and driving widespread consumer adoption. Reflecting these difficulties, TFH conducted a round of layoffs in June.
