Pine Labs Jumps 14% in $440M India IPO After Valuation Trim
On Friday, Gurugram-based fintech firm Pine Labs successfully debuted on Indian stock exchanges, closing its first trading day 14% higher to secure a $440 million IPO despite previously trimming its valuation. Backed by global payment giants PayPal and Mastercard, the company’s strong debut represents the second-largest Indian fintech listing this year, trailing only online brokerage Groww’s massive $750 million market entry earlier this week.
Market Reaction and Valuation Metrics
The company’s stock opened strong at ₹242 and peaked at ₹284 before settling at ₹252, representing a solid gain from its initial issue price of ₹221. This trading activity pushed the market capitalization of the Gurugram-headquartered company to ₹289 billion (approximately $3.3 billion). While this market value represents a decline from Pine Labs’ 2022 private valuation of over $5 billion, the positive debut underscores robust investor confidence in India’s expanding role in the global financial technology sector.
From POS Terminals to a Global Payments Powerhouse
Established in 1998, Pine Labs has transitioned from its origins as a point-of-sale (POS) hardware provider into a comprehensive digital payments ecosystem. Today, the platform supports bill payments, account-aggregator transactions, and diverse merchant services. The firm has scaled its operations well beyond Indian borders, establishing a footprint in 20 international markets, including Singapore, Malaysia, Australia, the UAE, the United States, and regions of Africa.
In its highly competitive domestic market, where it rivals major players like Razorpay, Paytm, and PhonePe, Pine Labs has recently achieved a crucial financial milestone. The company swung to profitability during the June quarter, recording a net profit of ₹47.86 million (approximately $540,000), a significant turnaround from the ₹278.89 million net loss reported in the same period last year. This profitability was driven by a 17.9% year-over-year surge in operational revenue, which reached ₹6.16 billion (around $69 million). Furthermore, international operations now account for roughly 15% of total revenue, climbing to ₹943.25 million (about $11 million) from ₹795.97 million in the previous year.
Investor Backing and Strategic Vision
“We will never stop being a startup,” remarked Pine Labs CEO Amrish Rau during the public listing ceremony. “Now that we are a listed company, [that word] will not be heard in our halls.” This milestone allowed long-term institutional backers—including PayPal, Mastercard, Temasek Holdings, and Peak XV Partners—to divest portions of their equity stakes during the offering.
Shailendra Singh, managing director at Peak XV Partners, praised the company’s long-term strategy, stating, “Pine Labs never wanted to compete on price. It always wanted to compete on a superior proposition. And we know this company would keep compounding because there were such strong moats in the business, and it shaped our worldview of how to think about companies and be patient and let ecosystems mature.”
Peak XV Partners, which spun off from Sequoia Capital in 2023, initially backed Pine Labs in 2009 during the height of the global financial crisis. The venture capital firm is celebrating consecutive public exits this week. Pine Labs is its second portfolio company to go public in quick succession, following the stellar debut of online brokerage Groww, which surged 12% at the open and ended its first day of trading 29% above its ₹100 issue price.
Riding the Wave of India’s Historic IPO Boom
The successful market debut of Pine Labs reflects a massive surge in India’s public markets. Startups spanning technology, e-commerce, manufacturing, and financial services are increasingly turning to public listings, propelled by robust domestic investor demand, favorable interest rate environments, and regulatory policies designed to encourage local listings. On a global scale, the financial sector has emerged as the leading IPO sector this year. According to Dealogic data, financial listings have raised $34.34 billion so far in 2025, more than doubling the $14.05 billion generated during the equivalent period in 2024.
Armed with fresh capital from its public offering, Pine Labs intends to accelerate its international expansion while simultaneously strengthening its domestic footprint. The company plans to introduce new digital products and services tailored to India’s fast-growing, internet-enabled consumer market. Rau emphasized this forward-looking momentum, stating, “Our core business will keep expanding. Our moats will be strengthened, and margins will grow.”
