Trump Taps Musk’s VC Allies for DOGE and Crypto Panels
Silicon Valley venture capitalists, including prominent figures like Marc Andreessen and Joe Lonsdale, are reportedly being tapped by Donald Trump’s transition team to join Elon Musk’s newly proposed Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) and key cryptocurrency advisory panels to help dismantle federal bureaucracy. As Musk assumes a highly influential role in shaping the incoming administration, his close network of tech investors is poised to transition from private tech boardrooms directly into federal advisory roles.
Silicon Valley Elite Mobilized for Musk’s DOGE Initiative
High-profile venture capitalist Marc Andreessen, co-founder of Andreessen Horowitz (a16z), is among the top names being frequently discussed for these advisory positions. Alongside Antonio Gracias and Joe Lonsdale, Andreessen has reportedly been asked to assist Musk’s advisory group, the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE). According to a report published by the Washington Post on Sunday, this team will focus heavily on overcoming the complex technical hurdles involved in gathering and analyzing data across various federal programs.
Who Are the VCs Backing the Government Efficiency Push?
These individuals represent a select group of Silicon Valley heavyweights who have long-standing professional and personal ties to Musk. Antonio Gracias is the co-founder of Valor Equity Partners, an investment firm that has achieved massive success by backing Musk’s flagship enterprises, including SpaceX and Tesla, where Gracias served on the board of directors from 2007 to 2021.
Joe Lonsdale, co-founder of the venture capital firm 8VC, is another key player. Lonsdale is a prominent investor in defense technology companies like Anduril, as well as government software platforms such as OpenGov. Lonsdale, who previously worked under billionaire investor Peter Thiel, also co-founded the data analytics giant Palantir. Meanwhile, Andreessen Horowitz has maintained a significant financial stake in SpaceX since 2022, aggressively purchasing shares when available, while Andreessen himself has remained a highly vocal public defender of Musk’s various business and political endeavors.
DOGE’s Radical Mission: Slashing Budgets and Staff
The primary goal of the DOGE committee is to recommend sweeping budget cuts to federal programs and drastically downsize the federal workforce. In a joint op-ed published in The Wall Street Journal last week, Musk and former GOP presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy outlined their reform plans. The duo acknowledged that their aggressive deregulation efforts will likely face intense legal opposition from established agencies. To communicate their progress directly to the public, the group plans to launch a dedicated podcast in the near future, according to the Washington Post.
Shaping the Future of U.S. Crypto Policy
Beyond government efficiency, Andreessen Horowitz is also positioned to secure a coveted spot on the Trump administration’s promised cryptocurrency advisory council. The council will consist of top-tier executives from the digital asset sector who will collaborate to establish a clear regulatory framework for the United States, as industry executives revealed to Reuters. Brian Quintenz, who currently serves as the head of policy for a16z crypto, has already actively advised Trump’s transition team.
Another major venture capital firm in consideration for the crypto council is Paradigm, a digital asset investment firm co-founded by Fred Ehrsam, who also co-founded Coinbase. While Coinbase itself is not a traditional venture capital firm, its corporate investment branch, Coinbase Ventures, is also actively lobbying for a seat on the advisory council, sources told Reuters.

Transition Tech Policy Guided by Former White House CTO
Additionally, former Peter Thiel associate Michael Kratsios, who served as the Chief Technology Officer of the United States during Trump’s first term, has been selected to oversee tech policy for the transition team, as reported by Politico. Kratsios is widely recognized for drafting Trump’s 2020 executive order designed to boost federal investment in artificial intelligence. Although he is not currently active in venture capital—having served as an executive at the AI data platform Scale AI since 2021, according to his LinkedIn—his deep ties to the Thiel network align him closely with the other Silicon Valley figures joining the administration.
At the time of reporting, representatives for Joe Lonsdale and Andreessen Horowitz could not be reached for comment, and neither party has responded to inquiries from the Washington Post regarding their potential roles.
