Cryptocurrency traders on the decentralized prediction platform Polymarket exchanged over $529 million on contracts forecasting the exact timing of U.S. and Israeli military airstrikes against Iran, raising intense global scrutiny over potential insider trading.

Suspicious Profits Trigger Insider Trading Concerns

A significant portion of the massive trading volume focused on the specific date of the military action. According to a Bloomberg report, blockchain analytics firm Bubblemaps SA identified six newly created anonymous wallets that collectively secured $1 million in profit. These accounts successfully bet that the U.S. would launch strikes on Iran by February 28, sparking concerns that individuals with non-public military intelligence may have exploited the platform.

While these trades could stem from highly calculated geopolitical speculation, Bubblemaps CEO Nicolas Vaiman warned of the systemic risks. Vaiman pointed out that the combination of Polymarket’s user anonymity and the rapid circulation of highly sensitive, conflict-related information creates powerful financial incentives for individuals with insider knowledge to execute early trades.

A Pattern of Geopolitical Speculation

This is not the first time high-stakes geopolitical developments have driven massive volumes on prediction markets. Earlier this year, in January, it was noted by analytics firm Polysights that betting activity spiked dramatically surrounding the political future of Iran’s late Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei. Traders heavily speculated on whether he would remain in power by the end of March, highlighting a growing trend of wagering on foreign leadership transitions.

The Ethics of Profiting From War and Death

The rise of markets tied to military conflicts and the fates of world leaders has ignited fierce ethical debates, with critics arguing that these platforms effectively place a bounty on human lives. Addressing these concerns, Kalshi CEO Tarek Mansour clarified his platform’s stance on sensitive listings. Mansour stated that Kalshi explicitly avoids listing markets directly tied to death and carefully structures its rules to prevent users from monetizing fatalities. To further distance the platform from these controversial dynamics, Mansour announced that Kalshi would refund all transaction fees generated from these specific conflict-related markets.
