DoorDash Orders Go Driverless: Waymo Launches Delivery

Alphabet-owned Waymo is officially returning to the delivery market through a strategic, multi-year partnership with DoorDash in Phoenix, Arizona, aiming to test whether autonomous vehicles can successfully scale local commerce delivery. This marks a significant business expansion for the self-driving pioneer, which has recently focused almost exclusively on its core robotaxi passenger service.

How the Waymo-DoorDash Integration Works

The newly announced collaboration allows DoorDash customers located within a massive 315-square-mile service area in Phoenix to have their orders fulfilled by a driverless vehicle. According to an official blog post, the program will initially launch with orders originating from DashMart—DoorDash’s proprietary convenience, grocery, and retail stores. Over time, the companies plan to expand the service to include a wider selection of local Phoenix merchants and diverse product offerings.

Instead of using sidewalk robots, this partnership utilizes Waymo’s fully autonomous Jaguar I-Pace vehicles. When an order is placed, the food or groceries are secured inside the vehicle’s trunk. Once the driverless SUV arrives at the destination, the customer must walk out to the vehicle and manually retrieve their items by unlocking the trunk using the DoorDash mobile app.

Waymo’s Pivots and the Evolution of Autonomous Delivery

While Waymo is primarily recognized for its commercial robotaxi operations, the company is no stranger to logistics. Phoenix has long served as its primary testing ground for both technical validation and business model experimentation. Waymo has previously run pilot delivery programs with major brands like UPS and Uber Eats.

The company also dedicated substantial resources to developing autonomous Class 8 trucks under its “Waymo Via” division. However, in 2023, Waymo made the strategic decision to shut down the trucking initiative to concentrate its engineering power and capital on passenger ride-hailing. Currently, the DoorDash alliance represents Waymo’s only active, delivery-focused operation or partnership.

DoorDash’s Growing Autonomous Portfolio

DoorDash is also aggressively exploring autonomous technology to optimize its logistics network. David Richter, Vice President of Business and Corporate Development at DoorDash, emphasized that the alliance provides consumers with an innovative delivery experience while advancing the company’s vision for a multi-modal, autonomous future of local commerce.

This is not DoorDash’s first venture into driverless logistics. The delivery giant already partners with sidewalk robotics firm Serve Robotics in Los Angeles. Furthermore, DoorDash operates an in-house autonomous hardware team that recently unveiled “Dot,” a proprietary sidewalk delivery robot currently undergoing real-world testing in the Phoenix area. Notably, the Waymo partnership will operate completely independently of the Dot program.

The Ultimate Convenience Test

The success of the partnership hinges on consumer behavior. Requiring customers to leave their homes to retrieve items from a car trunk introduces a friction point compared to traditional “to-the-door” human delivery. Both companies will closely monitor whether the novelty and efficiency of an autonomous vehicle outweigh the loss of traditional doorstep convenience.
