Amazon is now displaying AI-generated product images within its search results to guide online shoppers, a controversial move rolling out on its platform that risks confusing consumers with fictional items.

The Risk of Misleading Online Shoppers

Generating fictional products to direct users toward search results is a highly unusual strategy for a major e-commerce retailer. This approach introduces a clear risk of misleading consumers, who may fail to read the fine print and assume they can purchase the exact dress or item shown in the AI-generated image, only to face disappointment when it does not exist. Furthermore, this feature raises obvious questions about why Amazon would choose to manufacture synthetic visuals when its platform already hosts millions of authentic photographs representing actual, purchasable inventory.

Amazon’s Growing Portfolio of AI Shopping Features

This visual update is part of Amazon’s broader, ongoing effort to embed artificial intelligence across its retail website and mobile app, yielding highly mixed results. On the practical side, Amazon successfully utilizes AI to generate concise summaries of customer reviews, highlighting the main pros and cons so shoppers can quickly evaluate a product without reading every individual post. Conversely, the company took a more bizarre turn last year by rolling out short, podcast-style audio product summaries featuring AI experts describing key product highlights.

Visual Search and the Shift to Alexa

Beyond search result imagery, Amazon has introduced several other AI-driven features to enhance product discovery. These include AI-generated “shoppable collages” designed to direct users to curated pages devoted to specific fashion styles, and Amazon Lens Live, which scans objects in a camera’s view to find visual matches. The retail giant has also enabled users to add text queries to visual searches and introduced a dedicated visual search widget for the iOS Lock Screen.

Additionally, Amazon restructured its conversational AI strategy earlier this month by replacing its Rufus AI chatbot with Alexa for Shopping, enabling users to conduct natural language shopping queries via both voice and text.
