OpenAI Partners with Pine Labs to Automate Indian Fintech
On Thursday, artificial intelligence pioneer OpenAI partnered with Indian fintech leader Pine Labs in New Delhi to integrate advanced AI-driven reasoning into its merchant payment systems, aiming to automate complex settlement and invoicing workflows across the fast-growing South Asian market.
Embedding Advanced AI into India’s Digital Payments Stack
Under the newly announced alliance, Pine Labs will directly embed OpenAI’s application programming interfaces (APIs) into its core transaction and commerce infrastructure. This integration is designed to facilitate highly automated, AI-assisted reconciliation, invoicing, and settlement processes for millions of businesses.
The collaboration marks a critical milestone in OpenAI’s strategic expansion within India, which has emerged as one of its most vital growth engines. The AI firm is actively looking to diversify its footprint beyond consumer applications like ChatGPT by integrating its models into enterprise workflows, academic institutions, and national infrastructure. Just days prior, OpenAI secured partnerships with premier Indian medical, engineering, and design universities to embed AI tools into higher education curricula, capitalizing on the country’s vast developer talent and massive internet user base.
Slashing Financial Settlement Times from Hours to Minutes
Pine Labs is already leveraging internal AI models to streamline its back-end financial operations. According to Chief Executive Officer B Amrish Rau, the implementation of AI has successfully reduced daily merchant settlement times from several hours to just a few minutes. Previously, the Noida-headquartered fintech relied on dozens of employees to manually verify and clear transactions across multiple banking networks before the start of each business day—a tedious process now largely managed by automated systems.
Expanding Efficiencies to B2B Workflows
The partnership with OpenAI aims to extend these operational efficiencies directly to Pine Labs’ merchant network and corporate clients. Initial rollouts will focus heavily on business-to-business (B2B) use cases, including invoice processing, automated reconciliation, and payment orchestration. Rau emphasized that repetitive, high-volume financial tasks governed by strict rules are prime targets for rapid AI adoption.
“While retail-focused AI dominates public discussion, the most immediate and profound impact lies in enterprise efficiency, particularly within B2B operations,” Rau stated. “Invoicing and settlement are workflows where autonomous AI agents can manage processes end-to-end, driving faster industry adoption.”
Navigating Diverse Regulatory Landscapes
The deployment of fully autonomous, agent-led payment systems will progress at varying speeds globally due to regulatory differences. Rau noted that markets with more flexible regulatory frameworks, such as parts of the Middle East and Southeast Asia, will see faster deployment of agent-initiated transactions, where Pine Labs is already prototyping solutions. Conversely, India’s strict payment authorization guidelines mean the domestic market will adopt a more gradual, human-assisted approach to AI commerce.

A Mutual Play for Scale and High-Volume Enterprise Workflows
For OpenAI, the alliance provides an entry point into India’s highly regulated, high-volume financial ecosystem. For Pine Labs, integrating these advanced models is a strategic move to increase merchant retention and transition from a traditional transaction processor into an all-encompassing digital commerce platform. This evolution is expected to drive higher transaction volumes and generate incremental revenue over time.
Pine Labs currently serves over 980,000 merchants, 716 major consumer brands, and 177 financial institutions. According to its latest prospectus, the company has processed more than 6 billion transactions worth approximately ₹11.4 trillion ($126 billion). With operations spanning 20 countries—including Singapore, Malaysia, Australia, the UAE, the US, and parts of Africa—the OpenAI integration has the potential to scale globally.
Non-Exclusive Collaboration and Independent Revenue Models
The financial structure of the partnership does not include a revenue-sharing agreement. Pine Labs will not take a commission if its merchants choose to implement OpenAI’s tools. Rau clarified that the two companies operate independently: Pine Labs benefits from increased payment service volumes, while OpenAI retains all revenue generated from its API usage.
Furthermore, the agreement is strictly non-exclusive, mirroring OpenAI’s existing partnership with Stripe in the United States. Pine Labs remains open to collaborating with other artificial intelligence developers in the future.
Prioritizing Financial Security and Agentic Innovation
As financial automation deepens, Pine Labs is constructing robust security and compliance frameworks to safeguard sensitive merchant and consumer transaction data. The goal is to maintain absolute data integrity and regulatory compliance even as autonomous AI agents assume greater operational control.
This initiative builds on previous AI exploration by Pine Labs’ Setu division, which recently experimented with agent-led bill payment experiences using OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Anthropic’s Claude. These efforts align with broader national trends, as India began piloting direct consumer payments via conversational AI chatbots last year.
The partnership was announced during the AI Impact Summit in New Delhi, where global tech giants including OpenAI, Google, and Anthropic are presenting their latest advancements alongside Indian startups focused on deploying scalable AI solutions across healthcare, education, and finance.
