Amazon CEO Warns Trump Tariffs Are Finally Hitting Prices

Amazon CEO Andy Jassy confirmed on Tuesday during a CNBC interview that American consumers are now facing higher retail prices on the platform as sellers begin passing down the financial burden of President Donald Trump’s import tariffs.

Why Prices Are Rising on Amazon Right Now

The Depletion of Pre-Tariff Inventory

According to Jassy’s interview with CNBC, both Amazon and its massive network of independent third-party merchants initially mitigated the impact of the tariffs by stockpiling inventory. This strategic buffer successfully kept consumer prices stable for months, but Jassy revealed that these cheaper, pre-tariff supplies officially ran out last fall.

“So you start to see some of the tariffs creep into some of the prices, some of the items, and you see some sellers are deciding that they’re passing on those higher costs to consumers in the form of higher prices, some are deciding that they’ll absorb it to drive demand and some are doing something in between,” Jassy explained. “I think you’re starting to see more of that impact.”

A Major Shift in Amazon’s Economic Outlook

This admission represents a significant turning point for the e-commerce giant. Just last year, Jassy stated that prices had not risen appreciably in the immediate aftermath of Trump’s tariff announcements. Now, that optimistic grace period has officially ended, making retail price hikes increasingly unavoidable in several product categories.

The Tight Margins of E-Commerce

Jassy emphasized that the structural reality of the retail industry makes long-term price absorption nearly impossible. With retail operating on mid-single-digit margins, even minor cost increases can disrupt a business model.

“At a certain point, because retail is, as you know, a mid-single digit operating margin business, if people’s costs go up by 10%, there aren’t a lot of places to absorb it,” Jassy warned, pointing out that businesses simply do not have endless options to hide these overhead spikes.

How Resilient Shoppers Are Reacting

Despite the upward pressure on pricing, Jassy observed that consumers remain remarkably resilient. However, their purchasing habits are visibly shifting in response to the tariff-induced inflation. Rather than stopping purchases altogether, many buyers are actively bargain hunting, trading down to cheaper alternative brands, or choosing to postpone major purchases of premium discretionary goods.
