US-based prediction market platform Kalshi has reached a massive $11 billion valuation after securing a $1 billion funding round, fueling its expansion despite ongoing state-level legal battles over online betting.

From MIT to Wall Street: The Minds Behind Kalshi

The financial technology powerhouse was co-founded by former hedge fund traders Tarek Mansour and Luana Lopes Lara. The founders initially connected as undergraduate students at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), where they studied computer science and mathematics before transitioning into the high-stakes world of finance.

The Legal Battleground of Prediction Markets

Prediction platforms have historically faced intense scrutiny and legal hurdles. Because these platforms allow users to bet on real-world events, they operate in a highly controversial regulatory gray area positioned directly between traditional financial instruments and sports gambling.

Kalshi’s Federal Victory vs. State Hurdles

Kalshi successfully cleared a major hurdle last year by suing the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC), securing the legal right for United States residents to trade on its platform. However, the company remains locked in active legal disputes with multiple state regulators who argue that Kalshi’s operations constitute illegal gambling under local laws.

Polymarket’s Aggressive US Comeback

The regulatory landscape is further complicated by major competitors like Polymarket. Barred from serving US residents since 2022 under a CFTC settlement, Polymarket has aggressively pushed to reenter the domestic market. Following the acquisition of a derivatives exchange and clearinghouse in July, Polymarket founder and CEO Shayne Coplan said on X that the platform has officially received the green light from the CFTC to go live in the United States.
