Amazon announced on Wednesday a massive $35 billion additional investment in India by 2030, raising its total planned commitment to $75 billion to aggressively expand its retail and cloud operations amid fierce local competition.

Empowering Small Businesses and Creating Jobs

The e-commerce titan confirmed that this capital injection will accelerate the digitization of local small enterprises while reinforcing its supply chain and logistics infrastructure. By 2030, the company plans to provide advanced AI tools to 15 million small businesses and generate 1 million employment opportunities across direct, indirect, and seasonal roles.

Tracking Amazon’s Growing Footprint in India

According to an Economic Impact Report by Keystone Strategy, Amazon’s cumulative investments in the South Asian nation already near $40 billion. This latest pledge builds upon a 2023 strategy where the company committed $15 billion—allocating a massive $12.7 billion specifically to scale Amazon Web Services (AWS) cloud infrastructure.

The Trillion-Dollar Race for India’s Digital Future

Amazon’s aggressive expansion follows closely on the heels of major moves by its closest rivals. Just a day prior, Microsoft unveiled a $17.5 billion investment plan for India slated for completion by 2029. Additionally, Google previously announced a $15 billion budget to construct a dedicated AI hub and expand its data center footprint in the region.

Microsoft and Google Join the AI Gold Rush

With over a billion internet users and a rapidly expanding smartphone demographic, India has become the ultimate battleground for global tech giants. The country is also drawing significant attention from leading artificial intelligence startups like OpenAI, Anthropic, and Perplexity, fueled by a massive wave of first-time internet users and a robust developer ecosystem driving generative AI adoption.

Navigating Local Competition and Quick-Commerce Rivals

Speaking at Amazon’s annual Smbhav event in New Delhi, Russell Grandinetti, Senior VP of International Stores, emphasized the strategic importance of local innovations. He noted that developments in India will inevitably shape how the company operates its global business.

Despite its massive scale, Amazon faces intense pressure from domestic players. Walmart-backed Flipkart and social commerce platform Meesho continue to challenge its market share, while rapid-delivery quick-commerce startups like Swiggy’s Instamart, Zomato’s Blinkit, and Zepto are capturing urban consumers at an unprecedented pace. Nevertheless, Amazon maintains a distinct advantage through its highly sophisticated logistics network and a merchant base exceeding 1.7 million sellers.

Amit Aggarwal, Senior VP of Emerging Markets at Amazon, reiterated this long-term commitment, highlighting India as one of the company’s most significant growth opportunities globally.
