E-commerce giant Shopify resolved a major system outage on Monday morning, November 27, that blocked thousands of digital merchants from processing transactions during Cyber Monday, the busiest online shopping day of the year.
Why the Cyber Monday Outage Hit Merchants Hard
The timing of the technical failure could not have been worse for digital retailers relying on high-volume holiday traffic. Cyber Monday represents a critical revenue window for online businesses, and Shopify is the backbone of this ecosystem. In fact, the platform reports that its merchants handle more than 10% of all e-commerce transactions within the United States.
What Caused the Shopify Login and POS Failures?
The technical disruptions began surfacing early in the morning, around 6:45 a.m. PT. Store owners attempting to access their dashboards reported immediate difficulties logging into their Shopify accounts. The glitch also extended to physical retail operations, as many sellers faced critical challenges accessing point-of-sale (POS) systems, effectively preventing them from processing in-person transactions.
The Root Cause and Resolution
According to Shopify’s official status page, the company identified and remedied the issue. Technicians traced the breakdown back to the platform’s login authentication flow, which explains why both administrative and POS login portals failed simultaneously.
While the company has confirmed that systems are showing signs of recovery and are being actively monitored, the aftermath of the crash continues to impact operations. Shopify warned merchants that its Help Center is currently experiencing longer-than-normal wait times for customer support as a direct result of the morning’s outage.
How Many Store Owners Were Affected?
While Shopify has not released the exact number of impacted storefronts, third-party monitoring services indicate widespread disruption. The outage tracking website Downdetector registered approximately 4,000 individual incident reports during the peak of the system failure.
