Cash App launched a new peer-to-peer “pools” feature on Tuesday, allowing users to easily collect collective funds for shared expenses like vacations, dining out, and group gifts directly within the app. The feature is currently rolling out to select accounts before expanding to the wider public in the coming months.

How Cash App Pools Work for Users and Non-Users

To initiate a pool, organizers simply open the payment tab, define a target funding goal, and invite contributors. While Cash App users can be added directly via their $cashtag, organizers can also generate and send a shareable link via text message. This link allows non-users to contribute instantly using familiar payment methods like Apple Pay or Google Pay, removing the friction of downloading a new app.

The pool organizer retains full control over the funds, with the ability to close the pool at any point and transfer the accumulated balance straight into their primary Cash App balance.

A Strategic Push to Counter Missing Profit Targets

Integrating Apple Pay and Google Pay for non-users is a highly tactical move designed to drive user acquisition. Cash App is actively searching for new growth channels after reporting sluggish consumer engagement, which resulted in a first-quarter gross profit that fell short of Wall Street and internal projections.

By lowering the barrier to entry for non-users, the platform aims to close the gap on key competitors. This update positions Cash App to compete head-to-head with Venmo and PayPal, both of which have long offered robust group-payment and money-pooling capabilities.
