Chainalysis co-founder and CEO Michael Gronager has temporarily stepped down from the New York-based blockchain analytics firm to take an immediate personal leave of absence.

Interim Leadership at Chainalysis

While the cryptocurrency intelligence firm has declined to share the specific reasons behind his departure, it confirmed the move is temporary. Chainalysis President and COO Sari Granat, who joined the company in 2022, is currently serving as the interim CEO, as first reported the news.

The Rise of the “Crypto Detective”

Founded a decade ago, the New York-headquartered Chainalysis has established a strong reputation as a premier “crypto detective,” servicing corporate clients and major U.S. government agencies. To optimize its operations, Chainalysis restructured its workforce last year, laying off slightly more than 15% of its 900-person staff to focus more heavily on government contracting.

Valuation Shifts and Secondary Market Activity

Backed by prominent early venture capital firms like Benchmark, Chainalysis reached an $8.6 billion valuation during its Series F funding round in 2022. However, secondary market pricing has since adjusted. Crypto investor Katie Haun, who first discovered Chainalysis during her tenure as a federal prosecutor, reportedly began buying up secondary shares of the company at a valuation of $2.5 billion this past April.
