On Thursday, tax compliance startup Numeral secured $35 million in Series B funding to scale its AI-powered platform, which automates complex sales tax filing for e-commerce and SaaS companies facing fragmented tax laws across the globe.

From Global Nomad to Tax Tech Innovator

The inspiration for Numeral struck Sam Ross, the company’s co-founder and CEO, while he was traveling the globe after a stint as a product manager at Airbnb.

Speaking in an interview, Ross recalled that in early 2018, remote work was not yet the norm. To fund his travels, he ran multiple self-bootstrapped direct-to-consumer (DTC) brands, including an online jewelry store and a vitamin e-commerce site that he still operates today.

Although the nomadic lifestyle offered immense freedom, Ross found himself constantly bogged down by the highly bureaucratic and complex task of managing sales tax for his online stores.

The Landmark Ruling That Changed E-Commerce

Historically, e-commerce and SaaS providers were exempt from collecting sales tax in states where they lacked a physical presence. However, the Supreme Court’s landmark ruling in late 2018 upended this rule, mandating that businesses collect taxes based on where their customers reside.

“Almost overnight, my tax obligations ballooned from just California to over 40 different states,” Ross explained. “It was incredibly painful.”

When Ross applied to the Y Combinator startup accelerator in 2023, his former Airbnb manager and YC partner, Gustaf Alstromer, urged him to build a platform capable of fully automating the sales tax lifecycle.

A $350 Million Valuation in Just Two Years

Numeral’s rapid execution culminated in a major milestone: a $35 million Series B funding round that values the two-year-old startup at $350 million. This capital injection comes a mere six months after the company closed an $18 million Series A.

The latest round was spearheaded by Mayfield, with additional participation from Benchmark, Uncork Capital, Y Combinator, and Mantis—the venture firm founded by members of the electronic music duo The Chainsmokers.

Leveraging AI to Navigate 11,000 Tax Jurisdictions

While the market is flooded with sales tax software, Ross recognized that artificial intelligence could eliminate human error and operate with the precision of a professional CPA. Numeral’s platform monitors changing tax codes across more than 11,000 jurisdictions, manages physical tax mail, and handles direct filing and payments on behalf of its clients.

Because tax codes are rigid and rule-based, the risk of AI hallucination remains exceptionally low. However, navigating the sheer eccentricity of local laws requires advanced processing.

“Some regulations are incredibly bizarre,” Ross noted. “For instance, in New York, a whole bagel is tax-exempt, but if you slice it in half, it is classified as prepared food and becomes taxable.” Numeral’s AI is specifically trained to recognize thousands of these hyper-specific tax anomalies.

This specialized approach has fueled explosive growth. Over the past year, Numeral has increased its revenue by 3.5x, expanding its portfolio to over 2,000 SaaS and e-commerce merchants, including prominent brands like EightSleep, Graza Olive Oil, and Manus.

Standing Out in a Crowded Market

Despite the niche nature of sales tax automation, the sector is highly competitive. Startups like Anrok and Zamp are actively vying for market share, while industry giant Avalara—owned by Vista Equity Partners—is preparing to return to the public markets via an IPO later this year.

To stand out, Numeral is leaning into its global reach. According to Ross, the company’s ability to handle international tax compliance is a key differentiator.

“We are actively filing taxes for clients in markets like Tanzania and Kenya—regions where businesses historically had to rely on expensive, localized CPA firms,” Ross said.
