Artificial intelligence giant OpenAI has acquired Hiro Finance, an AI-powered personal financial planning startup backed by high-profile venture capital firms Ribbit Capital, General Catalyst, and Restive, founder Ethan Bloch announced on Monday.

An Acqui-Hire in the Making

While the financial terms of the transaction remain undisclosed, Hiro has announced plans to wind down its operations on April 20 and permanently delete all user data from its servers on May 13. Because of this timeline, the deal is widely considered an acqui-hire. Bloch confirmed that Hiro’s team will transition directly to OpenAI. Although he declined to specify the exact headcount joining the AI powerhouse, LinkedIn data indicates the startup has approximately 10 employees.

What Was Hiro Finance?

Founded in 2024, Hiro launched its consumer-facing AI tool just five months ago to simplify complex financial planning. The application allowed users to input personal financial data—including salaries, outstanding debts, and recurring monthly expenses—to model various “what-if” financial scenarios and make more informed economic decisions.

Solving the AI Math Problem

A core differentiator for Hiro was its specialized training in financial mathematics. During a product demo, Bloch highlighted a feature that let users manually verify the accuracy of the tool’s calculations. While modern frontier large language models have recently made massive leaps in mathematical reasoning, historical models frequently struggled with precise arithmetic, making Hiro’s specialized mathematical training highly valuable.

Why OpenAI Is Targeting the Fintech Sector

This acquisition aligns with OpenAI’s broader commercial ambitions. The company actively markets ChatGPT as a powerful resource for corporate finance teams. Bringing Hiro’s specialized talent under its roof suggests OpenAI is looking to deepen its capabilities in automated financial analysis, though it remains unclear if the company plans to launch a dedicated, standalone financial planning application.

The OpenClaw and Robo-Trading Angle

The deal could also strengthen OpenAI’s position among developers and advanced users who currently favor rival models like Anthropic’s Claude. Many of these users utilize OpenClaw, a popular open-source agent designed for automated stock trading. Interestingly, Bloch previously built his own automated trading agent using OpenClaw, which he named “RoboBuffett,” as he shared on LinkedIn.

Ethan Bloch’s Track Record of Tech Exits

Hiro represents the latest chapter in Bloch’s extensive entrepreneurial career, which began when he was just 13 years old. As he recently told Business Insider, Hiro was his 15th project. After his first 13 ventures failed, Bloch found success with his 14th project, a social media SaaS tool called Flowtown, which launched in 2009 and sold for $4.5 million.

He followed that success by founding the automated savings neobank Digit, which was acquired by Oportun in 2021. While public investor relations materials valued that transaction at over $200 million, Bloch noted the final sale figure was closer to $230 million. Now, his latest venture has been absorbed by OpenAI, a company currently rewriting records for venture valuation and growth as it eyes a potential historic public offering.
