UK-based business financial platform Tide has officially joined the unicorn club after securing $120 million in fresh funding led by TPG, driving its valuation to $1.5 billion as its rapid expansion in India surpasses its domestic UK user base.

A $1.5 Billion Valuation Powered by TPG’s Impact Fund

The newly secured investment round consists of a mix of primary and secondary capital. While the eight-year-old startup declined to disclose the exact split of the transaction, the deal includes share liquidation by employees, early angel investors, and several minority stakeholders. TPG backed the round through its multi-sector impact vehicle, The Rise Fund, which currently holds a portfolio of over 85 mission-driven enterprises. Existing backer Apax Digital Funds also participated in the round.

Targeting the Underserved Micro-Business Sector

Globally, micro and small enterprises—including independent contractors, freelancers, and solopreneurs—spend a disproportionate amount of time managing administrative tasks. Traditional banking institutions and generic fintech platforms rarely offer solutions designed for their specific operational pain points, which range from accounting and invoicing to tax filing, payroll, and expense management.

Tide solves this problem through a unified business financial platform. The startup provides a suite of highly tailored tools, including seamless accounting integrations, invoicing software, business loans, asset finance, payroll systems, expense cards, and company registration services.

How India Became Tide’s Largest Growth Engine

Initially launched in the UK in 2017, Tide expanded into India in December 2022 to tap into the country’s massive small business ecosystem. According to recent Indian government data, the nation is home to around 60 million micro and small businesses that employ over 250 million people.

Since its entry into the Indian market, Tide has onboarded more than 800,000 Indian businesses (which it refers to as “members”). This rapid growth has allowed India to overtake Tide’s profitable UK market, where the platform serves nearly 800,000 members, representing roughly 14% of the UK’s small and medium business sector.

Conquering Cash and Navigating Local Regulations

“There is a huge trend to formalization. So, our biggest enemy is cash, and not any competitors,” said Oliver Prill, CEO of Tide. He noted that despite debates surrounding minor fluctuations in India’s economic expansion, the growth rate remains incredibly strong compared to continental Europe or the UK.

Tide estimates that approximately 4 million new micro and small businesses launch in India every year. These emerging enterprises typically require support to access formal credit, accept payments via the government-backed Unified Payments Interface (UPI), and navigate the complex Goods and Services Tax (GST) system. Tide addresses these needs directly through its digital applications on both iOS and Android.

Expanding Beyond Tier-3 Cities and Securing Credit

Tide India CEO Gurjodhpal Singh stated that the company is on track to onboard 1 million Indian businesses by the end of this year. The platform is experiencing particularly strong demand from tier-3 cities and beyond, targeting smaller, less urbanized regions that have historically lacked robust digital and financial infrastructure.

To facilitate credit access, Tide partners with approximately 25 lenders in India, matching businesses with financial institutions based on their specific profiles. The platform has also diversified its local offerings to include fixed deposits, bill payments, bank transfers, and ATM cash withdrawals.

Global Expansion and the Future of Agentic AI

Beyond the UK and India, Tide is executing a broader European expansion strategy, having launched in Germany in May 2024 and France earlier this month. The fintech customizes its platform for each geographic market, offering localized product features and native language support.

The new capital injection will be used to fund further geographic expansion, enhance Tide’s core product offerings, and invest in agentic AI capabilities. While the platform already covers a broad spectrum of finance and administration services, management plans to address remaining product gaps shortly. Prill indicated that major product developments fueled by this funding round will launch in the coming months and quarters. Tide currently employs more than 2,500 people across its global offices.
