US Secures Extradition of Crypto Fugitive Do Kwon

Montenegro will extradite disgraced Terraform Labs co-founder Do Kwon to the United States to face federal fraud charges following the catastrophic $40 billion collapse of his cryptocurrency empire, Bloomberg reported.

A Global Legal Battle Over a $40 Billion Collapse

Do Kwon faces severe criminal charges in both the United States and his native South Korea. This international legal tug-of-war stems from the historic 2022 crash of Terraform Labs’ flagship cryptocurrencies, TerraUSD and Luna. The sudden collapse wiped out more than $40 billion in investor wealth, triggering a massive downturn in the global digital asset market and sparking intense international investigations.

The SEC Settlement and Corporate Liability

Prior to this extradition decision, Terraform and Kwon were found personally liable for civil fraud during a trial in April, which was initiated by the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). To resolve the regulatory allegations, Terraform Labs agreed to a massive $4.5 billion settlement with the SEC, marking one of the largest regulatory penalties in crypto history.

From Fugitive to Custody: The Montenegro Arrest

Kwon’s run as a fugitive ended in March 2023 when Montenegrin authorities arrested him at the airport in Podgorica, the capital city, as he attempted to board a flight to Dubai. While the extradition to the U.S. is now confirmed, local officials have not yet disclosed the exact timeline for his transfer. Additionally, it remains unclear how this latest development impacts a previous judicial order from August, which had slated Kwon for extradition to South Korea.
