Google, PayPal Partner to Launch AI Agent Commerce

On Wednesday, September 17, 2025, tech giant Google and fintech leader PayPal announced a groundbreaking multi-year partnership to pioneer AI-driven “agentic commerce” by integrating Google’s advanced artificial intelligence with PayPal’s global payment infrastructure. Under this agreement, PayPal will utilize Google’s AI technology to develop next-generation shopping experiences, migrate its infrastructure to Google Cloud, and integrate its payment solutions deeper into Google’s ecosystem.

While the companies have not yet disclosed the specific features of these upcoming shopping experiences, the division of labor is clear. Google will supply its state-of-the-art AI technology and machine learning expertise. In turn, PayPal will leverage its massive global scale, identity verification solutions, and deep personalization capabilities to ensure transactions are seamless and secure.

Supporting the New Agent Payments Protocol

As part of this alliance, both companies will actively champion the adoption of Google’s newly unveiled Agent Payments Protocol. Introduced on Tuesday, this open-standard protocol is designed specifically to facilitate and authorize transactions initiated directly by autonomous AI agents. The initiative has already gained significant momentum, securing backing from more than 60 major merchants and financial institutions worldwide.

Deep Integration Across Google’s Ecosystem

The partnership also significantly expands PayPal’s footprint across Google’s most popular enterprise and consumer platforms. PayPal will now serve as a primary payment option for card transactions within Google Cloud, Google Ads, and Google Play. Furthermore, Google will integrate several of PayPal’s core financial services, including its branded checkout system, the Hyperwallet payouts platform, and standard PayPal Payouts.
