Amazon Prime Video Launches Short News Clips to Compete with TikTok
Amazon Prime Video is now challenging TikTok by introducing short news clips. On Monday, the company announced that it is expanding its news offerings to include on-demand video snippets that highlight both local and national stories. These clips will be accessible on televisions and various living room devices, with plans to extend availability to the web and mobile apps for Prime Video in the near future.
The new clips will be featured in the News section of the Prime Video app, specifically within the Trending Topics and Local News carousels. This addition complements Prime Video’s existing news coverage, which includes local, national, and global stories from major news providers, and is accessible to all U.S. users, regardless of Prime subscription status.
As of now, Amazon has not confirmed whether the mobile clips will be designed for vertical viewing, but they will be categorized as short-form content for both iOS and Android platforms.
While TikTok is primarily recognized as a platform for entertainment, it is also, alongside Instagram, becoming a significant source for news among younger audiences. Gen Z frequently engages with news creators and influencers on these short-form platforms, including YouTube Shorts. By introducing short video content to Prime Video, Amazon aims to attract the attention of Gen Z users, despite lacking a dedicated social media outlet of its own.
However, Gen Z’s preference for social apps is driven not solely by the brevity of the videos but by the manner in which the information is conveyed. Research from Pew Research indicates that these younger viewers favor short news content that “feels organic, not overly polished.”
Prime Video is not the first streaming service to incorporate short-form clips into its offerings. Peacock began supporting short clips in March, followed by HBO Max and Netflix in July, and Disney+ in August. These developments reflect a broader industry trend to cater to viewers who now prefer entertainment in shorter, more digestible formats that can be consumed in just moments or minutes rather than extended hours.
