Finally, Spotify has answered parents’ calls for change! On Tuesday, the streaming giant announced a groundbreaking feature that enables the exclusion of children’s music from your Spotify Wrapped experience, addressing a long-standing concern.

Spotify has unveiled a new toggle feature that allows users to filter out kids’ and family music from their personalized music profiles. This means parents can finally enjoy their Spotify Wrapped experience without the interference of Kidz Bop, Disney songs, or any other children’s tracks that typically dominate their playlists. Global Rollout and Accessibility

This feature is currently being rolled out globally on mobile devices for both Free and Premium users. Once activated, it will automatically exclude any kids’ music from your listening profile.

A Long-Awaited Solution

While there are certainly more significant issues in the world, this new feature is a much-anticipated relief for many Spotify users—especially those with children. Parents have expressed their frustrations regarding how their kids’ music preferences have skewed their annual Spotify Wrapped results for years, particularly since the feature’s inception.

The Reason Behind the Change

The need for this feature arose from the common practice where parents’ accounts are frequently used for their children’s music listening, even when separate accounts exist under a Spotify Family plan. Many home devices, like smart speakers and televisions, are typically linked to a parent’s account, allowing unrestricted streaming in shared family spaces such as living rooms and playrooms. Additionally, kids often have their own speakers in their bedrooms, leading to an endless loop of bedtime songs and lullabies.

Impact on Listening Preferences

Children also tend to take charge of music selection during car rides, and in a bid for peace, parents often concede to their requests—listening to the same Jack Black song from the Minecraft movie on repeat just to keep the peace.

This shared listening dynamic has muddied Spotify’s understanding of individual users’ music preferences, leading to confusion over what the account holder genuinely enjoys versus what they’ve been forced to play.

How the Toggle Works

With the introduction of this feature, Spotify aims to rectify years of frustration. The toggle will be set to include kids’ music by default, but users can easily disable it to ensure that such tracks will no longer influence their music recommendations. This includes songs from animated films, family TV show themes, nursery rhymes, and other kid-focused tracks.

Enhancing Your Spotify Experience

Once kids’ music is excluded, it will no longer impact Spotify’s recommendations, which include popular playlists such as Discover Weekly and Daily Mix, as well as your year-end review known as Wrapped. Notably, this adjustment will retroactively apply, meaning any kids’ music already played won’t count towards your Wrapped for top songs or artists.

Previously, Spotify provided a cumbersome method to exclude specific tracks or playlists from users’ profiles, but the new toggle simplifies the process significantly. Furthermore, the company has recently rolled out Managed Accounts for users under 13, allowing them to safely explore age-appropriate music with parental oversight.
