Amazon’s Brutal New Podcast Strategy: Sell Everything

Amazon has aggressively restructured its podcast division over the past six months, dismantling its Wondery studio to merge celebrity audio content with direct e-commerce sales, according to a report by The New York Times.

The Fall of Wondery and the Shift to Audible

The shift began in August 2025, when the tech giant eliminated more than 100 positions from its prominent podcast studio, Wondery. While Amazon insisted at the time that the brand would survive—which it technically has—insiders report a far more drastic reality. Industry sources state that Amazon effectively “took a sledgehammer” to the studio, shifting traditional, audio-only podcasts under the Audible umbrella.

Targeting On-Camera Celebrities via Creator Services

In place of the traditional studio model, Amazon established “Creator Services,” a specialized department designed to collaborate with high-profile, on-camera talent. This new division focuses on video-friendly celebrities, securing partnerships with major names such as Dax Shepard, Keke Palmer, and NFL stars Jason and Travis Kelce.

Merging Content and Commerce: The Kelce Blueprint

This strategy is highly visible in Amazon’s plans for the Kelce brothers’ hit show, “New Heights.” Instead of relying solely on traditional ad rolls, Amazon is building an “expanding universe” around the creators. This includes the launch of the dedicated Kelce Clubhouse storefront, where listeners can purchase official merchandise, stream the “Kelce” documentary, and buy curated items for game-day parties.

According to Matt Sandler, the general manager of Creator Services, the ultimate goal is to seamlessly “infuse both the content and the commerce together.” While leveraging merchandise is a common tactic for independent creators, industry analysts note that Amazon stands alone in its willingness to completely dismantle an established media company to achieve this level of retail integration.
