Amazon has officially stopped accepting new customers for its pioneering crowdsourcing platform, Mechanical Turk (MTurk), this week, following years of escalating quality issues driven by AI bots and automated fraud on the service.

The AI Irony: Bots Training Bots

Over time, the relationship between Mechanical Turk and artificial intelligence models has devolved into a complex, self-referential cycle. Originally designed to leverage human intelligence for tasks computers struggled to perform, the platform has increasingly been compromised by the very technology it helped train. Indeed, a stark 2023 analysis revealed that between 33% and 46% of MTurk gig workers were utilizing large language models (LLMs) to complete their assignments. This widespread automation has severely compromised the integrity of annotated data, sparking intense debate over whether human-in-the-loop validation remains viable on the platform.

“Dead for Years”: Users React to the Freeze

Following the public disclosure of Amazon’s decision, the user community expressed little surprise. On Reddit, one veteran contributor argued that MTurk essentially died years ago, pointing to a massive influx of bots and fraudulent accounts that drove away both legitimate researchers and honest workers. The user predicted that Amazon will eventually decide that maintaining the server infrastructure for MTurk is no longer financially viable, ultimately pulling the plug on the service entirely.
