Revolut Quietly Launches Beta in India’s Payment Market
British fintech giant Revolut has quietly launched a controlled beta version of its app in India to thousands of waitlisted users, aiming to capture a share of the country’s booming digital payments ecosystem ahead of a broader public rollout. This strategic move marks a critical milestone in the London-headquartered company’s multi-year effort to establish a footprint in one of the world’s most competitive financial technology markets.
The quiet launch comes as India’s digital payment landscape continues to break global records. Driven by the government-backed Unified Payments Interface (UPI), the nation currently accounts for nearly half of global real-time payments. In a single month, the UPI network processed a record 23.2 billion transactions valued at approximately ₹29.9 trillion (roughly $313.8 billion), highlighting the massive scale of the market Revolut is entering.
Testing the Waters in a High-Growth Market
Revolut began accepting signups for its Indian waitlist earlier this year. Over the past few weeks, selected users have started receiving access to the platform. A company spokesperson confirmed the phased rollout, noting that a few thousand Indian customers are already actively using the platform.
The localized beta app is currently available for download on both the Google Play Store and Apple’s App Store, specifically tailored to the nuances of the Indian market.
According to the spokesperson, this controlled onboarding of waitlisted users allows the fintech to collect valuable feedback on core product functions. By doing so, the company can refine the user experience and optimize its value proposition before opening the platform to the general public. Currently, only a small fraction of the 450,000 customers on the waitlist have been granted access.
What Indian Users Can Access Right Now
Beta participants in India can currently access a robust suite of financial tools. This includes UPI-based payments, digital e-money wallets, domestic prepaid cards, multi-currency cards, virtual cards, and disposable virtual cards.
Revolut plans to expand this offering by integrating its popular Lifestyle features and the RevPoints rewards program before initiating a wider launch. However, some features found in European markets, such as joint or family accounts, will not be available in India. The company clarified that offering these specific products would require a full local banking license.
Revolut’s Strategic Road to India
The fintech has been diligently building its India business since 2021, when it recruited experienced fintech executive Paroma Chatterjee to spearhead its local operations. To accelerate its regulatory clearance and expand its operational capabilities, Revolut acquired domestic forex player Arvog Forex in 2022. This acquisition paved the way for the company to offer cross-border remittances and multi-currency accounts.
Subsequently, Revolut secured a prepaid payment instrument (PPI) license from the Reserve Bank of India (RBI). This crucial regulatory approval enables the company to issue prepaid cards, host digital wallets, and interface directly with the highly popular UPI network.
While Revolut intends to open direct onboarding for all Indian users in the near future, it has declined to share an exact date for the commercial debut. Chatterjee previously said in a social media update that the company was aiming for a comprehensive product launch in the second quarter.
Ambitious Targets for the Subcontinent
Revolut is positioning itself to capture a highly lucrative demographic: India’s rapidly growing class of tech-savvy, globally minded consumers. The company has set its sights on a target demographic of 150 million “globally aspiring, digitally native” Indians aged 25 to 45.
The long-term roadmap is highly ambitious. Revolut aims to onboard approximately 20 million users in India by 2030, with a target of processing at least $7 billion in transaction volume.
Global Expansion Beyond Europe
Despite the lack of a full public launch, consumer anticipation in India has already driven significant traction. Data from Sensor Tower indicates that the Revolut app has been downloaded nearly 820,000 times in India since appearing on local app stores. Notably, more than a third of these downloads occurred during 2025 and the early months of 2026, signaling accelerating momentum.
While European nations like the UK, France, Spain, Italy, and Germany remain Revolut’s primary markets by download volume, the company is increasingly prioritizing high-growth emerging markets. Sensor Tower reports that Revolut downloads rose by 40% in Thailand and 52% in Vietnam during 2025. Meanwhile, downloads in Brazil skyrocketed by 487% year-over-year to reach 1.8 million, highlighting why a successful entry into India is pivotal to the fintech’s global growth strategy.
