Shopify Goes All In on AI Agents to Disrupt Online Shopping

Shopify President Harley Finkelstein Speaks At Starupfest

Shopify President Harley Finkelstein announced at the Upfront Summit in Los Angeles that the e-commerce giant is going all-in on AI-driven “agentic” shopping to revolutionize how consumers discover and buy products online. This strategic shift aims to capture a massive untapped market, as digital transactions currently account for only a small fraction of total retail sales.

Unlocking the Untapped Potential of Online Retail

Currently, Shopify ranks as the second-largest e-commerce provider in the United States, positioned directly behind Amazon. Despite this dominant market status, Finkelstein pointed out that approximately only 18% of U.S. retail purchases take place online. He believes that agentic AI technology will serve as a powerful new gateway for e-commerce, driving those numbers significantly higher.

The Rise of AI-Powered Personal Shoppers

According to Finkelstein, Shopify plans to deploy these advanced agentic applications to function as highly personalized digital shoppers. While the initial rollout of this technology will be gradual, these autonomous AI agents are projected to redefine consumer habits by seamlessly discovering, comparing, and purchasing products on behalf of users.

A key advantage of agentic shopping is its ability to bring deep contextual understanding to the retail experience—a capability where traditional search engines currently fall short. During his presentation, the longtime e-commerce executive illustrated this point using his own preference for On running shoes.

“Agentic is fundamentally merit-based,” Finkelstein explained. He noted that a standard search engine query for “sneakers” typically funnels users to massive retail chains like Footlocker. However, an AI shopping agent that understands a user’s specific brand loyalty will bypass generic options to present tailored selections directly from preferred brands like On.

A Higher Level of Personalization

While modern search engines already track browsing history to customize search results, agentic commerce promises to elevate this personalization to a much more sophisticated level. These AI agents will analyze consumer preferences with unprecedented depth to deliver highly accurate recommendations.

Furthermore, Finkelstein emphasized that these conversational AI tools offer a more authentic shopping experience. Unlike human sales representatives or sponsored search results, these chat-based agents do not work on commission. Their sole objective is to display items that align perfectly with the user’s actual likelihood of purchasing.

Empowering Independent and Long-Tail Merchants

This technological shift could level the playing field for the millions of independent merchants hosting their stores on Shopify. Many of these brands struggle to gain visibility in a crowded digital landscape. Agentic shopping is expected to play a critical role in organically surfacing these lesser-known brands to highly targeted consumers.

Rather than replacing existing retail channels, Finkelstein views agentic shopping as a powerful new component of the broader retail operating system. The company remains highly optimistic about this upcoming era of commerce, anticipating that it will unlock unprecedented growth opportunities for both retail giants and niche, long-tail merchants alike.
