VLC Media Player Hits 7 Billion Downloads Milestone

In a landscape dominated by costly streaming services, the completely free and offline VLC media player, created by the non-profit organization VideoLAN, has officially surpassed 7 billion downloads across all available platforms.

Jean-Baptiste Kempf, the president and chief developer of VLC, shared this exciting news via email. This remarkable achievement comes nearly 18 months after the application celebrated reaching the 6 billion download milestone in January 2025.

Kempf highlighted that the organization has recently adapted VLC for Amazon’s new Vega OS designed for televisions. He also noted that efforts are underway to enhance support for various platforms and codecs, with VLC gearing up for the upcoming VLC 4 release, although the development process is taking longer than anticipated.

Previously, VideoLAN hinted at incorporating AI-driven translation and subtitle features utilizing local models, although it remains uncertain whether these enhancements have been implemented.
