YouTube has unveiled an innovative feature that enables users to craft their own video recommendation algorithms. Announced on Wednesday, this new capability, known as custom feeds, allows users to articulate their video preferences in their own words for more tailored suggestions.

How to Create Your Custom Feed

To develop a custom feed, users simply enter a description of their desired content into a prompt box on YouTube. This could range from a feed focused on a specific interest to a more general theme. For example, YouTube suggests users might create a dedicated feed for video podcasts to enjoy during a 30-minute commute or request videos that evoke a certain atmosphere, such as “calming commentary videos to help me unwind.”

AI-Powered Customization

This prompt-driven feature utilizes Google’s Gemini AI model to generate a feed based on user requests. The customized feed will be prominently displayed at the top of the YouTube homepage under its own dedicated tab. Thanks to the AI-driven nature of this tool, users can provide extensive details regarding what they want their feed to include or exclude, how they prefer the content to be prioritized, and more.

Following Industry Trends

The introduction of custom feeds aligns with similar initiatives from various social networks that have developed tools allowing users to create their own algorithm-driven experiences. For instance, decentralized social network Bluesky has been at the forefront of popularizing this concept, distinguishing its platform from competitors like X. This year, Bluesky introduced Attie, an AI tool that simplifies the feed creation process even further. Other platforms, including Meta’s Threads, Instagram, X, and most recently, Spotify, have also adopted their own AI-enhanced feed-building functionalities.

Enhancing User Experience

YouTube is confident that the implementation of custom feeds will significantly enhance the user experience by facilitating a deeper exploration of the extensive array of videos available on its platform.

“One of the amazing things about being on YouTube is that the world is always at your fingertips,” commented Emily Moxley, VP of Product Management for Viewer AI, during a pre-brief with journalists ahead of the Made On YouTube event on Wednesday. “There are over 20 billion videos in the YouTube corpus, so you’re always one search away from a treasure trove of topics.”

Importantly, these new custom feeds will not replace YouTube’s primary feed that showcases all your recommendations. Instead, they will provide users with a convenient way to access the specific feed that best matches their interests upon opening the YouTube app.

The rollout of support for multiple custom feeds will begin next month on both YouTube’s web and mobile platforms.
