YouTube Enhances Shopping Experience with AI ‘Ask YouTube’ Feature
YouTube officially announced on Wednesday at its Made On YouTube event that its newly launched AI-driven feature, “Ask YouTube,” will evolve into a shopping assistant.
Initially introduced as an experimental tool for conversational search, Ask YouTube has expanded its role within the platform. This innovative feature enables users to search for content using natural language, allowing for more nuanced and detailed queries compared to conventional search methods. YouTube will curate a selection of results that may include both Shorts and long-form videos, assisting users with various topics, from crafting detailed travel itineraries to learning new skills, as well as providing recommendations tailored to specific interests.
The platform has now stated that Ask YouTube will incorporate additional functionalities to aid users in their shopping experiences. For example, when searching for a specific product, users can expect curated suggestions that include comparative tables highlighting different product features or categories, personalized to their preferences.
Moreover, users will have the capability to pose follow-up questions directly on the video’s viewing page, enhancing the interactive experience.
YouTube has revealed that these enhancements are a response to evolving user behaviors, as individuals increasingly rely on creators for insights into various products, valuing their recommendations. In June alone, over 140 million users engaged with Ask YouTube, marking an astonishing increase of over 500% since December of the previous year, according to the company.
“This growth is fueled by a tailored Gemini model that matches viewers’ intricate inquiries to the precise moments in videos where answers are provided, transforming a passive search into a direct and meaningful exchange with the content and the creator,” said Emily Moxley, VP of Product Management for Viewer AI at YouTube, during a press briefing leading up to the event.
