Binance founder Changpeng “CZ” Zhao was released from U.S. custody on Friday after serving a four-month prison sentence for failing to implement adequate anti-money laundering controls at his cryptocurrency exchange.

The Legal Fallout and a Historic $4.3 Billion Settlement

Zhao’s release follows a high-profile plea deal with the Department of Justice (DOJ), where he personally paid a $50 million fine and agreed to step down permanently from any executive role at Binance. Concurrently, the exchange settled its federal charges by paying a historic $4.3 billion penalty, marking one of the largest corporate resolutions in U.S. history. Despite relinquishing operational control, Zhao retains a massive 90% equity stake in Binance. According to Forbes, this holding secures his position as the world’s 25th wealthiest individual, boasting a net worth of approximately $61 billion.

What Lies Ahead: CZ’s Next Venture

With his prison term completed, Zhao is expected to pivot his focus toward his newest venture, Giggle Academy. Announced shortly before his sentencing, the zero-revenue educational platform aims to provide free basic education globally. Now fully transitioned back to civilian life, the crypto billionaire is positioned to actively develop the project, which is currently recruiting new talent to expand its operations.
