Audible Syncs Kindle E-Books and Audiobooks in New Update

Amazon-owned Audible launched a new “Read & Listen” immersion feature in the U.S. on Wednesday, allowing users to sync Kindle e-books with their audiobooks simultaneously to boost comprehension and counter Spotify’s recent market expansion.

The company announced the rollout of this “immersion reading” tool directly within the Audible app. This upgrade allows users who own both the digital text and audio versions of a book to follow the written text on-screen while the narration plays. To enhance usability, the app highlights the text in real time as the narrator speaks, and allows readers to transition between formats across different devices.

How the ‘Read & Listen’ System Works

Although the Kindle app already offered a tool to switch between Kindle texts and Audible narrations upon purchase of both formats, this marks the first time the feature is natively integrated into the Audible app. While customers must own both editions to utilize the sync feature, Audible has confirmed it will offer discounted audiobook upgrades to users who already own the matching Kindle e-book.

Global Availability and Language Support

At launch, the “Read & Listen” feature supports hundreds of thousands of titles. The system is compatible with books in English, Spanish, German, French, and Italian. While the feature is currently live for users in the United States, Audible plans to expand access to the United Kingdom, Germany, and Australia over the coming months. To simplify the process, the Audible app will automatically scan user libraries to match eligible Kindle e-books with their audiobook counterparts.

Why Dual-Format Reading Boosts Engagement

Prior to this update, many users bypassed buying double formats by using Amazon’s Alexa assistant to read Kindle books aloud. However, Alexa’s synthetic, monotone text-to-speech output often lacks the nuance of professional narration, which can lead to lower retention. By offering discounted audio companions, Amazon aims to incentivize dual-format purchases while delivering a premium listening experience.

Internal data and industry research cited by Audible indicate that combining visual reading with auditory input enhances focus and information retention. Furthermore, the company noted that multi-format consumers are its most active users, reading and listening to nearly double the volume of content per month compared to those who only listen to audiobooks.

Target Audience and Industry Impact

The feature provides clear advantages for language learners, students tackling complex academic texts, and fast-paced readers. It also assists those who prefer professional voice actors or need help with complex character names and pronunciations, which is a frequent challenge in fantasy and sci-fi literature.

Read & Listen gives book lovers the best of both worlds. Whether you’re learning a new language, studying for school, or lost in a story’s world, you no longer have to choose one format over the other.”

Amazon has confirmed that this new playback feature will not alter or negatively impact royalty payment structures for publishers.
