Circle Stock Surges 168% in Blockbuster Market Debut
USDC stablecoin issuer Circle Internet Financial saw its stock skyrocket 168% to close at $83.23 on its first day of trading on the U.S. public market, after pricing its initial public offering at $31 the previous day amid surging institutional demand for digital assets.
This massive first-day performance highlights robust public market enthusiasm for cryptocurrencies and stablecoins. Investor confidence has been significantly bolstered by the incoming Trump administration’s highly supportive stance on digital assets.
How Circle’s Success Impacts Upcoming Tech IPOs
The dramatic upward swing in Circle’s market debut is expected to influence upcoming listings, potentially encouraging institutional underwriters to set higher IPO prices. Market observers are closely watching imminent offerings, including digital health firm Omada Health, which prices this Thursday, and challenger bank Chime, scheduled to go public next week.
Valuation Turnaround: From Private Discount to $16.7B Market Cap
Circle initially priced its IPO to yield a market valuation of $6.9 billion. This figure fell short of its peak private valuation of $7.7 billion, established during a $400 million Series F funding round in 2021, according to PitchBook data.
However, the opening-day surge quickly erased that discount. By the closing bell, Circle’s market capitalization reached $16.7 billion (excluding employee stock options), securing approximately $1.1 billion in fresh capital through the offering.
Defying the “Down-Round” Trend
Circle now joins a prominent group of tech companies that successfully went public below their private market valuation peaks. Recent examples of these “down-round” IPOs include healthcare platform Hinge, contractor management software ServiceTitan, and social platform Reddit. Circle’s subsequent trading pop indicates that initial pricing discounts are not deterring tech startups looking for the right window to list.
A Long-Awaited Public Debut
This successful listing comes three years after Circle’s initial attempt to enter the public markets. In 2022, the stablecoin issuer planned to go public via a merger with a Special Purpose Acquisition Company (SPAC) at an estimated $9 billion valuation, a deal that was eventually terminated.
