GameStop Drops $500M on Bitcoin in Bold Treasury Move
On Wednesday, video game retailer GameStop officially acquired 4,710 bitcoin, valued at more than $500 million at the time of purchase, in a strategic move to establish the cryptocurrency as a corporate treasury reserve asset.
Struggling Retailer Pivots to Digital Gold
The legacy brick-and-mortar chain has consistently fought to remain relevant in an era dominated by digital game downloads. Beyond its operational hurdles, the company gained global notoriety in 2021 when it became the unexpected epicenter of a massive retail-driven short squeeze.
While GameStop’s stock price still carries a premium compared to its pre-Reddit r/WallStreetBets era, the business continues to face structural headwinds. Years after its viral meme-stock fame, the retailer continues to report persistent year-over-year declines in net sales.
A Strategic Treasury Move Amid Market Volatility
To strengthen its balance sheet, GameStop announced to shareholders in March that it was revising its corporate investment policy to include bitcoin as a treasury reserve asset. This latest acquisition marks the execution of that strategic pivot. However, public markets reacted cautiously; GameStop shares stumbled immediately after these initial cryptocurrency disclosures, reflecting investor wariness over digital asset volatility.
The Washington Shift: From Crackdown to Crypto Reserve
GameStop’s aggressive push into cryptocurrency aligns with a broader macroeconomic and political shift in the United States. Under the previous Biden administration, federal regulators heavily scrutinized the crypto ecosystem, citing concerns over systemic fraud and financial misconduct. Today, the Trump administration has completely reversed that regulatory stance, actively initiating a federal Strategic Bitcoin Reserve. Additionally, Trump’s own media company has outlined plans to secure $2.5 billion specifically to purchase bitcoin.
The political normalization of digital assets has reached unprecedented levels. Trump recently hosted major holders of his personal memecoin—highly volatile tokens driven primarily by online communities rather than underlying utility—for an exclusive dinner at the White House.
The ‘End Crypto Corruption Act’
The growing intersection of presidential influence and decentralized finance has drawn sharp criticism from political opponents, who warn of potential market manipulation for personal enrichment. In response, Senators Chuck Schumer (D-NY) and Jeff Merkley (D-OR), alongside 17 Democratic co-sponsors, introduced the End Crypto Corruption Act.
“Currently, people who wish to cultivate influence with the president can enrich him personally by buying cryptocurrency he owns or controls,” Senator Merkley stated in an official press release. “This is a profoundly corrupt scheme. It endangers our national security and erodes public trust in government.”
Despite these legislative concerns, the bill faces steep hurdles without bipartisan backing in a Republican-controlled political landscape.
Joining the Ranks of Corporate Bitcoin Giants
Backed by favorable federal signaling, bitcoin’s market price surged to historic highs in May, crossing the $110,000 threshold after dropping near $75,000 in April. By adopting this treasury strategy, GameStop aligns itself with prominent institutions like Tesla, Coinbase, and Block, each of which maintains over $1 billion in digital assets on their balance sheets.
