Disney’s New CTO: From Accused AI Startup to Leadership Role

Disney has appointed its first-ever chief technology officer, and intriguingly, the new executive comes from an AI startup that the entertainment giant once accused of infringing its intellectual property.

Karandeep Anand, the former CEO of Character.AI, leads a company that has faced multiple legal challenges since its inception in 2021. Notably, one legal issue arose in September 2025 when Disney issued a cease and desist letter to the company, accusing it of violating copyrights related to its cherished characters.

The Functionality of Character.AI

Character.AI enables users to design unique virtual characters powered by generative AI, allowing for interactive conversations and engagements. Disney has previously alleged that the platform was hosting copyrighted characters from its own franchises, raising serious concerns about intellectual property rights.

Additional Legal Troubles

In addition to Disney’s claims, Character.AI has faced lawsuits over accusations that its chatbots encouraged harmful behavior, including self-harm and suicide, further complicating the company’s legal landscape.

A Strategic Move by Disney’s New CEO

According to Variety, Anand’s appointment was made by the newly appointed Disney CEO, Josh D’Amaro, who succeeded Bob Iger after his resignation in March. This hiring indicates D’Amaro’s intention to steer the company toward embracing innovative technologies and solutions.

Anand’s Professional Background

Prior to his role as CEO at Character.AI, Anand served as a board advisor to the company, eventually taking the helm in May 2025. His extensive experience includes a tenure at Facebook from 2015 to 2021, following a substantial 15-year career at Microsoft, showcasing a robust background in technology and leadership.
